Tips to resolve that clogged up waste pipes problem
How would you handle a plugged drain pipe in your toilet? – Keep a plunger handy for such emergency situations. The process is pretty straightforward to apply. But don’t just shove the plunger into the drainpipe and start pumping it violently, you could make matters much worse. Place the cup of the plunger exactly over the drainage and push it downwards and upwards with short sharp movements that generate suction within the drainage and pipe. In theory the suction created by pulling up quickly will dislodge the material that is clogging your bathtub, toilet or sink. Note that some tubs and sinks are fitted with overspill holes that must be closed with a sponge or wet towel before proceeding with the plunger.
You could use a waste pipes clearance chemical that is designed to break down the material instead of the more conventional plunger. This is usually done after you attempt to unplug your drainage using your plunger. The solutions should be left alone for sometime as they loosen up the clog, then you should pour down hot water into the drain pipe to clear the whole thing out. As a precaution you should wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or corrosive chemicals on. After chemical flushing, you may try the plunger again – this can cause the chemical/water mix to splash back on you – eye guards are highly advisable here. The chemical product comes with specific manufacturer’s instructions; it is important to read and follow them carefully.
If the plunger does not work, try detaching the drain trap by removing the bolts with suitable tools. Now, this process can be really messy, so keep the towel and bucket handy. Chrome plated fittings can be protected from scratches by taping up the teeth of the pliers or wrench; that should also give you a firmer grip on the nuts of the trap. You will be able to check the drains P-trap for any obstructions in the pipe opening after you remove it. If the plunger, the chemical or trap removal does not help, then the blockage could be much deeper in the pipework.
A deep blockage in the toilet can be loosened by a toilet auger. With a bathtub or sink, however a drainpipe snake should be used. drainpipe snakes are designed to reach deep down into the far reaches of your narrow pipes. With the help of the adjustable handle, you can literally drill into the blockage and pull out the clog from the drainage. The P-trap should be reconnected once the obstruction is cleared, slowly flush the drainpipe with hot water to confirm that there is no obstruction and that there are no leaks. Make sure that everything is tight and sealed properly and test the P-trap for leaks.
If none of the steps you have taken work, it is time to bring in an expert plumber. Professional plumbers can identify and solve serious problems like aged pipes caving in, tree root invasion, blocked sewer line or soil stack; these should not be attempted by the homeowner as you will not have the right tools to solve the problem.
