Plugged sewers tips for the unlucky

We’ve all been there – we’re in the shower, and suddenly we feel the water start to rise up around our feet. Yuck! A plugged drain pipe. You are hurriedly brushing your teeth, and before you can even blink your eyes, the sink is brimming over with water. Nobody likes to deal with blocked drainage because they are a real hassle and they give an impression of being unsanitary (because they are). But it is something that most people will have to deal with every once in a while. The best course of action for you is to be prepared to deal with it by learning how to unblock bathroom drains.

Why Do They Happen?.

Most often, when the dirt, sand and debris that we wash off from our bodies combines with the hair that we shed in a bath, all those entangled clumps accumulate within and eventually block the drain pipe. Residue from daily use of shampoo, conditioner, soap, cleaners and other products tends to further aggravate the sticky build up. When the offending mass becomes too dense to allow any water to flow through freely, the problem is identified as a clogged drainpipe. If water builds up quickly in your sink or tub when it should flow smoothly out of your drainpipe, you may already have a plumbing clog on your hands.

So how can you unclog these drainage?.

Time to roll up your sleeves and tackle the clog – here are a few tips on what you can do to unblock your bathtub or sink drain. The first step is to remove the plug whether the blocked drainpipe is in a sink or bath. In the case of the bathroom sink, you can remove the stopper by either pulling it out, unscrewing the nuts that hold it in proper position. In case of your bath, the plug can be unscrewed at the mouth of the drainage or the overflow plate can be removed to expose the assembly.

The removal of the plug may allow you to spot the cause for the blockage. It is very likely to look like a small mass of hair and debris wrapped around the drainpipe’s hardware. Clear out as much of the stoppage as possible. You may find it difficult to get at the blockage, in which case you could use something like a wire hanger to fish the material out. Clearing out the hair, soap scum and particles could very well take care of the problem for you.

If the clog cannot be pulled out with the help of the hanger, then you should use other blockage-clearing methods. A drain pipe plunger can help you get rid of clogs that are too deep down to reach by inserting your hand. Begin by covering the overflow drain with a wet towel so as to create a stronger suction from the plunger. Now position the plunger exactly over and around the drainpipe hole and push it rapidly up and down with short quick movements. If you are successful, any water, if trapped, will be immediately drained when the plunger is released.

You can unblock the drains through chemical drain pipe cleaner too if a drains plunger does not work for you. However this should be your last resort because the chemicals used can harm your bathroom fittings and accessories, they are corrosive.

If all else fails, get a professional drainage service in.

After taking all the steps that you can carry out yourself, if the clog still remains, it will be wise to call your neighborhood plumber or drainage services company for some assistance. A professional plumber should quickly solve your problem with his special tools and equipment. It may cost you, but you will find it is worth the money once you can use your sink and shower worry free.
