has anyone used a cattle water trough for an outside personal soaking tub?
I live in a remote area of Tennessee and have a small cabin that has a shower stall only. I love to soak in epson salts and need something inexpensive to use and be able to drain and to be placed outdoors. Has anyone ever tried using a cattle trough?
yep works great. just be sure that it’s not so big that you can’t empty it on your own, other wise when you buy it have the store drill ya drain hole and fit it with a plug. Enjoy.
Oh yeah. No problem there. Either that, or latch onto an old claw foot tub, if you’re lucky and can get one cheap. But a livestock tank will work just fine.
Backwoods hot-tub…been there, done that
(also good for doing laundry in….you can still buy a tin, finned, plunger-looking, wooden handled implement for washing clothes in your cow-tub.)
Your average galvanized round/oblong tank will work fine.
Re-do the drain set up — there will be a predrilled good sized hole on one side near the bottom, with a most likely plastic plug inset. Head over to the plumbing or schedule 40 irrigation/sprinkler fitting pipe section of the store where you got the tank. Make a setup for that drain hole with a union and gasket on both sides of the wall of the tank, and a inline, blade type shut-off with a hose-thread adapter at the end. That way you can drain off your tub some distance away.
About the epsom salts – Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
But, remember they are just magnesium sulfate, and over time, especially if you have hard water, it will build up on gavanized interior like scratchy cement. Be religious about rinsing and cleaning it every time you use it (a good idea anyway) It might be a good idea to paint the interior with a couple coats before you ever use it.
When a seam eventually leaks, use a 2-part liquid weld product for repair. Bathtub caulk and the like never holds up.
Buying a stock tank made out of hard plastic will eliminate the electrolysis problem of a metal tank, and they are usually black, which helps the sun heat your water up nicely. But, most of them seem to have molded angles in the sides and bottom which might interfere with being able to sit comfortably.
