Blocked drains will fade out with these points
Blocked drains can be one of the worst type of household emergencies. Like many emergencies, there is often no warning before they occur. Unpleasant odors, flooding of your house and loss of power are the worst aspects of a blocked drain. When this problem arises in business areas, customers are lost, workers are inconvenienced and your operations and turnover are badly hit.
There are some simple preventative measures that you can take to reduce the likelihood of a blocked drain whether it is through structural defects or foreign objects and they are listed below.
Ensure that the plughole is cleaned of hair that gather in it on a regular basis.
Small sized objects like combs, medicine bottles and toilet rolls should be carefully placed to prevent their accidental slipping into the toilet.
Regularly flush the wash basin and bath or shower pipework with hot water and a disinfectant to clear soap residue and prevent build up over time.
Large and disposable items such as towels, nappies or product wrappings can clog your drainage pipe and thus should not be flushed down the toilet.
Do not throw the kitchen waste into the sink as composting is a better option for them.
In the event of such material falling into the sink, do not push the matter through the plughole as this may impact and worsen the blockage; instead, try to extract the matter.
Never flush down cooking fats into the drain because they solidify on coming in contact with cold water and thus it becomes very difficult to remove them. However in case cooking fats are stuck into the drain, you can try to emulsify and dilute them by using detergent with warm water. After flushing the drain, run the tap for sometime, at least a minute, to ensure that there are no more blocked materials.
Now for some general maintenance tips to cut the risk of blocked drainage:.
Rain downpipes and roof gutters must be inspected bi-annually.
Take care when working at height but remove any accumulated debris and leaves with a trowel.
Making sure that the drains are free flowing on a regular basis is important and this can be done by lifting the inspection covers and making sure that they are easily accessible.
Keep external drain grids free of fallen leaves, autumn moss and other garden materials.
Washing the extremal drains with hot water and detergent as regularly as the internal drains is a good practice.
In case of a business, it is better to employ a CCTV drain inspection service for drain surveys and ensure that they conduct a regular check on your drainage system. Such an inspection will indicate sludge buildup in the pipework if any, and also inform you of the structural condition of the drainage system.
